Muscat: The serene Qantab lagoon, surrounded with brown mountains, in Muscat will for the first reverberate with the high decibel sounds of powerboats when 18 pilots kick off the first leg of UIM Formula 2 Continental Cup on Thursday.

The 40-lap race is being held as part of the ongoing Muscat Festival and for the first time resident of Omani capital will get the taste of high adrenaline sport in which drivers from UAE, UK, Kuwait, Sweden , Finland and other countries will take part.

"We are over 125 people, associated with event, currently camping in Muscat," Adul Salam Fairooz, the promoter of the UIM race, told Gulf News yesterday at the Muscat Municipality headquarters.

"This is the first time we are holding this event here and the setting looks just perfect for a close race," he said, adding that depending on the success of the first race here, they would look at holding the event every year.
