Theirs is a combination that has rocked ever since their first film together, 1992’s Roja.

Tamil director Maniratnam and music composer A.R. Rahman are ready with their next, Kaatru Veliyidai.

At the trailer and audio launch ceremony held in Chennai on March 20, the duo looked back on the 25 years of journey together.

Rahman recalled the opportunity to work with Maniratnam, a blessing from God. “It gave me a platform to work with refinement and high ideas.”

Maniratnam, remembering his first meeting with Rahman, said just like his smile, Rahman’s enthusiasm for music remains unchanged. “For Rahman every film is like his first film.”

Kaatru Veliyidai is a love story set in Kashmir against the backdrop of the Indian Air-Force. Karthi Sivakumar plays the lead role of a fighter pilot. Aditi Rao Hydari is paired opposite him. The supporting cast includes Malayalam actress KPAC Lalitha, Rukmini Vijayakumar, Delhi Ganesh and RJ Balaji.

The trailer of Kaatru Veliyidai takes viewers to the snow-laden stretches of Kashmir hovering over the lives of fighter pilots who also find time for romance and get drenched in the colours of Holi, while protecting the nation.

Clearly, there is a treat awaiting in cinematographer S. Ravi Varman’s visuals and in Rahman’s songs. Not to forget Maniratnam’s story telling.

Kaatru Veliyidai is scheduled for April 7 release. The Telugu version is titled Cheliyaa.
