A reader ask:  I am 36-years old and I am suffering from excessive burps and belching throughout the day. I tried many home remedies and also went for a detox, but the problem still exists. What could be the cause? Is it something serious?

Dr Thomas Joseph (Specialist Gastroenterologist, Aster, Dubai) replies: First of all, let me assure you that belching is a normal reflex and does not denote gastrointestinal dysfunction by itself. Belching occurs when the stomach gas is released into the food pipe (Oesophagus), by the relaxation of the muscles at the lower end of the food pipe. Air gets into the stomach during swallowing. With each swallow about 2 to 5ml of air is ingested and this goes into stomach. When there is excess gas, distension of stomach occurs and then the gas is released into the food pipe. Belching usually is a voluntary process i.e. it can be controlled at will, but sometimes it can be involuntary also.

Usually, belching is seen with conditions that cause increased ingestion of air, like rapid eating, gum chewing, smoking and ingestion of carbonated beverages. Belching is also seen commonly in anxious individuals. Physical defects that interfere with normal swallowing like ill-fitting dentures and nasal obstruction can also cause belching. Belching is considered abnormal only when it is associated with other symptoms like heartburn, vomiting, nausea, swallowing difficulty or abdominal pain.

A few home remedies can help bring relief such as lying on your side or in a knee-chest position until the gas passes. Avoid chewing gum, eating quickly, and eating gas-producing foods and beverages.

Treatment of belching usually involves behavioral modifications, including avoiding chewing gums and carbonated beverages and cessation of smoking. Eating food slowly and chewing properly also helps. Physical defects like ill-fitting dentures and nasal obstruction should be corrected. Antacids are of no value in the treatment of belching. As the most common cause of persistent belching is excessive air ingestion in persons with anxiety, it is very important to understand that belching is not a disease and keeping a relaxed mind will help alleviate the symptom.
