Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, yesterday visited the Sharjah Fort (Al Hisn), which has been recently renovated and restored.

He was accompanied by Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah.

Dr Shaikh Sultan was received by Shaikh Khalid Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah Urban Planning Council, and Abdullah Mohammad Al Owais, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Information, and other senior officials.

Dr Shaikh Sultan toured the fort and was briefed on its exquisite exhibits and heritage-related contents, which reflect its rich historical significance in the region.

The building, which is now open to the public as a museum, was once the residence of the Sharjah ruling family. It was built in 1820 by the late Shaikh Sultan Bin Saqr Al Qasimi. The fort is a real masterpiece of old Arab architecture.

The fort has played an important role and witnessed several social, political, commercial and military developments and changes in the region.
