Sharjah: Dubai teenager Maria Vincent launched her first book at the Sharjah International Book Fair on Friday.

The 17-year-old Indian writer has written My Words and Thoughts, a collection of poetry and prose, fiction and non-fiction.

Published by AuthorHouse UK, the book includes her commentary on “socio-cultural issues of global relevance within the context of the 21st century”, including topics on media and technology.

Meanwhile, the “My Poems” section is an anthology of various poems that “brings to light much of the seemingly insignificant incidents”.

Her writings have both overt and subtle philosophical undertones and carry her personal views on a range of issues.

For instance, the 12th-grader discusses the relative forms of happiness, noting it is not just about laughter. “For those who are victims of violence and war, happiness means peace and silence,” she writes.

Maria, a student of The Indian High School, Dubai, has been awarded The Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance and The Sharjah Award for Excellence in Education.

She aspires to become a geophysicist and come up with innovations that can solve “mysteries” about earth and space.
