Sharjah: Traditions and cultures of the UAE are being highlighted in Sharjah over the next two weeks, giving a chance to nationals to understand the value of their heritage and incorporate it into their modern way of life.

His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, Sunday inaugurated Sharjah Heritage Days, which runs until April 18 in the Old Sharjah area.

The eighth edition of Sharjah Heritage Days is being held under the slogan, "We are entrusted with our heritage", and is being held for 15 days throughout the emirate, including Sharjah city, Hamriya, Al Dhaid, Khorfakkan, Kalba, Wadi El Helou and Maleha.

The event also coincides with the celebration of World Heritage Day on April 18.

"The target is not just linking all sectors of society with the heritage of our ancestors, but it is also to study the foundations on which our society was built," said Abdul Aziz Al Mussalam, General Coordinator of Sharjah Heritage Days.

"It is important that we all incorporate our heritage in our modern lives.

"A nation with no past is a nation with no present, and we aim to instil Heritage Days as a leading culture event in Sharjah."

Organised by the Heritage Division of the Sharjah Information and Culture Department, in collaboration with the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, Sharjah Heritage Days offers an insight into wedding rituals, Arabic poetry and songs of the seas recited by young nationals.

Platform

The event, according to Al Mussalam, promotes heritage as a platform in a family-oriented atmosphere to nationals and expatriates alike.

"Visitors have the opportunity to explore the past through various activities, where they can witness nationals protecting their heritage and traditions," he said.

The activities available at Old Sharjah also include a parade, handicraft exhibitions and a display of the country's different types of environment, in addition to traditional games, cuisines and coffees.
