Abu Dhabi: Dr Kamal Hamdan, General Manager of Research and Consultant Foundation in Lebanon highlighted insecurity that Arab women face and discusses the modalities of protection to ensure their security.
He considered those human insecurities that either target women directly or those that create specific social, economic and political dynamics that affect women's lives.
Hamdan was speaking yesterday at the Arab women conference taking place in Abu Dhabi.
He argued that Arab women face three types of insecurity; those that are conflict-related, those related to personal violence and those connected to women's social and economic vulnerabilities.
He categorised Arab countries within three main classes; resource rich and labour importing, resource rich and labour abundant, and resource poor and labour abundant.
"Female heads of households, elderly women and unemployed women or those who work in the informal sector are most prone to being vulnerable and falling into poverty," he said.
In his paper he also sheds light on the state of women in conflict-ridden countries, namely Palestine and Iraq.
Hamdan suggested a conceptual framework that views protection as comprehensive approach that includes protection against conflict and violence, including legal protection, as well as social protection that comprises the provision of social security and social assistance.
