Dubai: The Shaikh Mohammad IT Education Project and Al Azhar have jointly launched a new online service to enhance global access to Al Azhar library's rare manuscripts.

The joint venture is part of Al Azhar's effort to communicate to a larger Muslim audience using the latest information and communication tools, said Grand Imam Dr Mohammad Sayed Tantawi, Shaikh of Al Azhar.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Tantawi said: "The website will help us promote the true essence of Islam and spread its message of tolerance and peace. We look forward to continue our cooperation with our brothers in the UAE; to develop more initiatives that benefit the Islamic world."

Dr Abdullah Al Karam, Director of Al Azhar Online Project, said the project was developed with the support of Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Project [to Preserve Al Azhar Scripts and Publish Them Online].

About the partnership, Dr Al Karam said the efforts are focused on using modern technologies to serve the Islamic nation.

"Al Azhar's new service will help scholars, researchers and millions of other people across the world view rare manuscripts that otherwise would have been inaccessible. We hope that our cooperation with Al Azhar will continue to grow in the coming years," said Dr Al Karam.

Al Azhar's new service, www.alazharonline.org, enable subscribers to download digital copies of several priceless manuscripts. CDs of the manuscripts can be also obtained from Al Azhar's online library. The money generated from these services will be used to further support the project.
