Abu Dhabi: Shaikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, opened the Anglican Church in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

The church inauguration coincided with Easter day celebrations. He congratulated Christians on Easter day and the inauguration of the church, adding that "the new building will be a worship place and an important centre for the Anglican sect in Abu Dhabi."

"The inauguration of the Anglican Church building in Abu Dhabi reflects ... that the UAE is tolerant and respects beliefs of others under the wise leadership of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan," Nahyan said.

Pastor Essam Attiyah, Head of the Anglican Church in Abu Dhabi welcomed the "culture of tolerance being exercised ... by the UAE leadership and depicts the tolerance of Islam." He thanked the UAE government and people for setting an example of respect and coexistence.

He denounced the blasphemous campaign against Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), indicating that "respect of religions is a sacred duty and any attempt to attack one religion is an attack on all religions and prophets." Present at the event were Mohammad Sa'ad Ebeid, Egyptian ambassador to the UAE, Turki Al Khraysha, Jordanian ambassador to the UAE and Khairi Al Oridi, Palestinian ambassador to UAE and other senior officials.
