Dubai: The first phase in modernising the library of the Istanbul-based Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture, located in the historic Yildiz Palace, started with a generous grant from His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Shaikh Mohammad's initiative assumes great significance as the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture, affiliated to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), currently boasts more than 65,000 rare reference books and 200,000 historic documents as well as images of Islamic civilisation.

Digitisation

The programme will ensure the complete digitisation of the IRCICA library's contents and achieve the upgrading of its website into a multilingual portal for easy access of information on Islamic civilisation by researchers worldwide.

The project was launched at a ceremony in Istanbul late last week attended by Abdul Rahman Bin Hamad Al Attiyah, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council; Moammar Goular, Mayor of Istanbul; Ambassador Izzat Kamel Al Mufti, Assistant Secretary General of OIC, and Dr Khalid Eren, General Manager of IRCICA.

Mohammad Al Murr, Deputy Chairman of the Dubai Cultural and Arts Authority; Dr Saeed Hareb, Adviser to the President of the UAE University; Jamal Bin Juwayreb Al Muhairi, Cultural Adviser to the Executive Office in Dubai, and Yasser Hareb, Vice-President for Culture at the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation, also attended the ceremony that brought together academic personalities as well as the Turkish diplomatic corps.
