Entries from seven countries to fight for best short film

Dubai: The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) will host its Muhr Awards for Excellence in Arab Cinema, aiming to motivate and nurture the emerging film market of the Middle East.
At the awards ceremony, 12 outstanding works from 7 countries will compete against each other in the Best Short Film category.
"This year's Muhr Awards received 33 per cent more entries than 2007 and there has been a palpable increase in the quality and calibre of the films we've received, since we launched the awards in 2006," said Erfan Rashid, DIFF's Arabic Programme Consultant for the competition.
"The best thing about the shorts [films] programme is that viewers are treated to a handful of wonderful stories instead of one long feature. We encourage audiences to give short programmes a try and sample some of the best up and coming talents in the Middle East," he said.
Two Emirati selections vie for the title. Bint Mariam, by Saeed Salmeen Al Murry, is a poetic tale of a young girl faced with life after the death of her husband. Waleed Al Shehi, a director from Ras Al Khamiah, presents Baab (Door).
