Dubai: Across Dubai, preparations for charitable efforts during Ramadan are in full-swing, with organisations ready to provide for needy people in the emirate and beyond during the month.
The Dubai branch of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will be catering daily to over 4,500 people to break their fast in tents set-up across the city, according to manager Mohammad Al Zarouni.
Funded by well-known business personalities, including Khalaf Al Habtoor, the tents will be set up in locations in front of Hyatt Regency in Deira, in the Al Quoz industrial area, each of which will cater to 800 people every evening.
This year, etisalat is sponsoring a tent for 600 people being erected near Sonapur. Other locations for RCA tents include Satwa behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel and the desert location in the Al Isaili area near Bab Al Shams, for people who work on the farms, Al Zarouni said.
In addition, mobile distribution points will be set-up in areas including Satwa and Al Aweer, with food parcels to needy families. "Yesterday, we also distributed coupons at the Al Ahli Club for 1,000 families who have been selected, so that they can purchase dry foods for the month," he said. "In Dubai alone we will be donating between Dh3 to 5 million throughout the month."
Saleh Zaher, of the Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Charitable and Humanitarian Establishment, told Gulf News that the organisation will be providing for around 2,500 needy families across emirates including Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman and Sharjah. "We will be providing basic food for one month such as around 38 kilograms of rice, 50 kilograms of sugar, which should be enough for a family of up to eight people," he said. "We give to both UAE nationals and expatriates, based on their needs after studying each case."
With the aim of developing innovative ways of allowing people to contribute to Ramadan appeals, Dar Al Ber's Ebrahim Dabbal said his organisation has set-up an e-donate function.
"We have a very clear vision that we want to be pioneer in our field in supporting poor people and one of our ways of doing this is e-donate, which allows you to contribute to our efforts online [www.daralber.com]," he said.
For the duration of Ramadan, the organisation will also be taking part in a radio programme during which needy listeners will be able to call in to seek assistance from the organisation. In addition, the organisation also coordinates more standard Ramadan activities including distributing food packages and iftar tents.
In Dubai, food for poor will be distributed daily at three locations - the Islamic Learning Centre near Al Diyafa Road, Al Bidda area, and the Dar Al Ber headquarters in Bur Dubai. Tents for people to leave donations of money or items will also be set-up in Al Ghusais and Jumairah, as well as a new location in Al Mamzer area.
