  • Residents are forced to pitch camp in dark alleys as power interruptions make staying indoors unbearable.

Sharjah: The lights still go off every night for about three hours in some industrial areas of Sharjah and residents said the hardships from the lack of power are too much to bear.

A resident living off the BMW Road said whenever the power failures occurred people from his apartment went down to the parking lot, carrying pillows to sleep in their cars.

"You can't keep going to your friend's place to stay with them," said Anthony.

On Tuesday the lights were out from 6.15pm to 9.30pm, he said.

Many residential apartments in Sharjah have small shops that sell spare parts or fix tyres and they are running their business with the help of power generators.

Noxious vapours

The noxious vapours from the generators rise up to the residential flats, he said.

And the only response the residents said they had received from the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority (Sewa) hotline was: "Inshallah, soon".

The power failures have been daily in Industrial areas, 2, 3, 13 and the lights are out for more than three hours.

In the Free Zone, the jewellery park which houses about 80 factories is still facing power interruptions. An owner of a jewellery workshop said on Tuesday lights went out from 9.30 pm till midnight.

"About 250 people are living in labour accommodation here. They can't cook because of the outages," he said.

According to Zainuddin in Industrial Area 3, Tuesday night was again bad as the power went out at 6pm and returned at 9pm.

"My wife just had a baby and she can't come down into the open," he said. "A boy in one of the flats has chicken pox and is suffering from the blackouts," he said.

Sewa said recently that there was a glitch in the gas supply and it was forced to roll the power cut downs across the districts.

With these daily power cuts its time for us to go and stay at the SEWA offices at least our children can be protected that way. Kindly keep your offices open for us.

Let it be a fair business from SEWA. If there is an issue SEWA should plan like this.
    1. Power cut should be equally distributed to all areas.
    2. Power cut should not be more than 1 hour continuous at any case , so that even SEWA not so professional to give power cut schedule to us, still we can be confident that Power will return in one hour.
    3. SEWA should try to be more professional in handling issues with proper information with good call centre to keep its users posted rather than hiding.
I think the time has come for the public and the federal government to think for alternative solution that SEWA before it is too late. No body knows the loss of even 1 hour power cut and its affect on public. When Sharjah introduced the Tenancy contract for family visa many shifted their to other emirates. Now again people started moving out of Sharjah because of Power issues.
I think government should take immediate necessary steps to hold the good economic condition of Sharjah.
Let us hope and look for the best.

Agree that SEWA has a glitch in the gas supply and it is forced to roll the power cut downs across the districts, but why only in some areas??? Let it be equal for all. Will SEWA compensate us for any loss or will they give us a discount in the electicity bill?? Do they have any answers for this?

SEWA can ask all bussiness units to switch off their Sign Boards and all other illuminations after 11PM, it will save you lot. SEWA can publish a cercular through news papers the timing of power cuts and the duration of each areas, so the people can make their like according to that. It will reduce the difficulties of common people.
