Sharjah: Building a cultural renaissance in the UAE in general and in Sharjah in particular is the aim of the Sharjah Expo Centre, which is hosting the Sharjah reading festival, a senior official said.

Saif Al Midfa, the general manager of the Sharjah Expo, said that the Sharjah Reading Festival is one of the major events organised by organisations catering to children and girls.

The Sharjah Expo Centre is hosting the festival to help build a cultural renaissance in the UAE in general and in Sharjah in particular.

Al Midfa said that the Sharjah Reading Festival aids Arabic children to get back to their heritage by being exposed to local literature and ideas which are being eroded by foreign ideals.

He has praised the role played by the festival in developing cultural awareness and helping the intellectual development of children, saying: "The importance of this event comes in the responsibility carried on its shoulder, which is to promote reading... among children, which is almost... extinct as a result of the invasion and technical dazzling of the child's thinking.

"Sharjah Reading Festival is a unique experience which creates an atmosphere of learning mixed with fun and entertainment, to improve the image of the book to the child," Al Midfa added.
