I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the Al Majaz Waterfront in Sharjah. The waterfront is contaminated with litter, especially around the corners.

A few days ago, I was visiting the place with my family. My son shouted: “I want to throw this in the water!” He was referring to a tissue that he had picked up from the ground and was about to throw it in the water when my husband and I stopped him.

My husband told him: “You are not supposed to do this. It’s bad. Drop it in a bin.”

My son replied: “But dad, there’s already so much garbage here. I will also throw the tissue here.”

He was adamant and also correct about the mess around; plastic bottles and empty wrappers were floating on the water close to the abra station. There was a foul smell in the area, and it was an unpleasant sight.

It took us a few minutes to make the child understand that it was indeed bad on part of the people who may have dropped the things there, but it surely is a point to ponder.

Sharjah does not have many recreational areas when compared to other emirates. The Al Majaz Waterfront is certainly a feather in its cap as it offers tremendous entertainment to both children and adults. Its green pastures and lengthy stretch of water soothes nature lovers, the dancing fountains add to its beauty, the play area that keeps the little ones busy and there are plenty of eateries to tentalise the taste buds of food lovers. Keeping the environment clean is the respobsibility of both the authorities as well as the people. Littering will not only destroy the park but will also be a setback for visitors.

I hope the concerned authorities will take immediate steps towards cleaning the waterfront and draw some measures so that people should refrain from doing the same in the future. Additionally, I urge people to behave responsibly and not throw empty wrappers and plastic bottles into the water. A better civic sense will help maintain the beauty of the place.
