Montserrat Martin, founder of Friends of Animals, has compiled a list of pets that have been abandoned in the past month. She is an active member of the community, working to improve animal rights. She receives calls from people informing her of pet abandonments.
1) A German Shepherd was found trapped inside a cage and left out in the sun in the Jumeirah Islands area, in Dubai. A neighbour informed of this act and the owners were approached several times. Once the municipality got involved, the owners promised to make a proper, air-conditioned house for the dog, but there has been no follow up since.
2) A Pinscher was found during the winter months in the garden of a villa in the Jumeirah area, in Dubai. It was tied to a trampoline with a small rope. First it kept barking, but as the weather became hotter, it became quieter. Once again the neighbours raised concern as they were disgusted by this act. On approaching the owners, it was understood that the dog was supposed to be a pet for the children and they used to play with him in the winters. However, now it’s just lying in the heat and will die if it’s not helped. They do feed him, but he’s tied to the trampoline day and night. People have approached them and even the municipality was informed, but nothing has worked.
3) In the Tecom area, in Dubai, four dogs were left abandoned in an apartment. The owner had left the country, as he had apparently run out of money as informed by the neighbours. They say he had said that he had asked someone to feed the dogs, but no one did that and three of them died. We’re following up on the fourth.
4) Snowy: A male cat found in Al Quoz area, in Dubai. The cat was extremely malnourished and was seen following people around, begging to be taken off from the road. He is vaccinated, microchipped, castrated and looking for a home.
5) Dolly: A female cat that was abandoned in Jebel Ali Village, Dubai. She was attacked by other cats and was severely injured. She has been treated and is now in foster care. She is vaccinated, microchipped, sterilised and looking for a home.
6) Lawrence: Abandoned by owner in Arabian Ranches, Dubai. They had a new born baby and let the cat go. He was suffering in the heat and roaming the streets. Eventually a car hit him and he was killed on the spot. He was microchipped.
