Abu Dhabi

I’m a resident of Abu Dhabi and have been living here all my life. A few days ago, as I prepared to sleep at night, I smelt something burning. I rushed to the balcony to investigate, and I was alarmed by what I saw.

Apparently, someone hadn’t thought much about incinerating paper and sweeping it out the window. I watched it sizzle as it seemingly sauntered past my widened eyes.

A few burning fragments fell into the balcony below ours, thankfully fizzling out before impact. It makes me shudder to think what could have happened otherwise. However, the smell persisted. On further investigation it turned out that a few fragments had landed in our bedroom’s balcony, too.

It goes without saying that this is utterly irresponsible behaviour. I informed the watchman who said that he would look into it. However, since nobody else saw the perpetrator committing the act, there were no further developments.

This incident points to only one thing — ignorance. Over the past few years, fires have been sparked by the callousness and indifference of such individuals. I wouldn’t, nor would anybody for that matter want to find themselves at the receiving end of such ignorance. So, the least I can do is advise everybody to be more alert. And don’t hesitate to raise your voice if you find anybody else indulging in such acts.
