Abu Dhabi

I would like to raise the issue of a lack of signals at pedestrian crossings in Abu Dhabi. I have been living along Hamdan Street in Abu Dhabi for the past four years. There is a pedestrian crossing across the six-lane road, between two popular shopping centres. This crossing, in particular, does not have any traffic lights, and this is why pedestrians do not know when to cross the road and motorists do not know when to stop.

Many a times, pedestrians have to wait several minutes in order to cross both sides of the road as motorists are reluctant to give way. Since it’s a six-lane road, many motorists are driving at relatively high speeds and stopping abruptly is not possible. This can lead to accidents and is dangerous for both pedestrians and motorists.

It’s not only this crossing, the one across Salama Bint Butti Street, previously 23rd Street, opposite Abu Dhabi Indian School is also without proper signals. Thousands of students study in that school, and I shudder to think what would happen if one of them rushes to cross the road and meets with a severe accident.

I request the authorities to take proper action on this issue and install signals at crossings to make it easier for pedestrians and motorists alike.
