Plan a walking route to your destination. Choose a route with the fewest street crossings and, if possible, cross at signalised or controlled intersections. This is what we learn from our elders, but unfortunately at Al Ittihad Road, which connects Dubai to Sharjah, there is neither a signal nor a pedestrian crossing for a long distance.

Crossing a street can become a matter of life or death. So plan, observe and don’t take risks because we have read about several people being involved in accidents on this road and losing their lives. We should learn from example.

It’s a busy road and even after so many accidents I’m in awe as to why nothing is being done. We have been seeing an increase in media coverage about jaywalkers in the recent past and we’re deeply saddened by the absence of the appropriate pedestrian facilities.

I hope that the authorities of Sharjah look into this issue immediately and make pedestrian safety a priority.
