The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has made parking spots near an electrical transformer in the Al Mussalla area, in Bur Dubai. It is indeed a good gesture on part of the RTA, who thought of the convenience of the car owners to find a parking spot with ease. They come up with parking areas wherever possible. However, in this case, it might be dangerous and might even lead to a casualty.

A small sign board hangs on the grill near the above mentioned parking spots and warns car owners of the dangerous voltage.

“Danger, 132,000 volts. Parking infront of transformers at your own risk,” it reads.

Think of a motorist who is desperately looking for a parking spot after a long day at work and being stuck in traffic for a while. He or she will breathe a sigh of relief after finding a spot, near the dangerous transformer. But on looking around he or she will spot the warning sign. Would this motorist then move the vehicle and get into the exercise of looking for a parking spot all over again?

My intention of raising this issue is to simply make people aware of any consequences that may arise in the future. For the safety of the motorists, I request the RTA to please seal these spots with a barricade. The authorities should also put a wider fence around the perimeter of the transformer as I see people of all ages walking close to the wall, without knowing that they are just few inches away from a very dangerous spot.
