Health experts state that children require physical activity on a daily basis.

Dr Amy Bailey, a clinical psychologist in Dubai, told Gulf News: “Participation in physical activity is important for all individuals regardless of age. Research has shown that when you exercise, your body releases chemicals known as endorphins. These are also referred to as ‘feel good’ chemicals as they trigger a positive feeling in the body. This can lead to improved levels of mood and a more positive outlook to life.

“Participation in regular activity is thought to improve self-esteem and reduce low mood and anxiety in children. When children experience success in physical activity they gain a sense of mastery and feel more confident.”

Dr Bailey says that children, especially those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), need to focus on some form of activity.

She said: “Children have a lot of surplus energy to burn, especially children with ADHD traits. Using physical activity to release this energy is a positive approach and reduces the risk of the child engaging in less appropriate strategies such as aggressive behaviours. In turn, the release can allow some children to be able to focus and concentrate more.”

Dr Martin Kramar, a psychologist in Dubai, agreed.

He said: “Physical activity is very important. The day must be balanced between the intellectual/cognitive work and physical activity. If there is no physical activity the body will release the stress hormones through increased aggression, anger, hyperactivity, palpitations, nervousness, digestive problems or tiredness.

“It is mandatory for every child to have some minutes of fresh air and physical activity on a daily basis. It would be appropriate to have a walk on the beach for at least 30 minutes. After sunset, even though it is warm and humid, we can do outdoor activities. We need to drink plenty of water, which is also good for detoxification.”
