Rani Mukherjee’s fight against a human trafficking mafia in Mardaani took in almost Rs150 million in three days at the Indian box office.

The first weekend collection of the Yash Raj Films’ production venture was Rs144.6 million, read a statement.

“I am very, very happy. There has been an overwhelming response,” Mukherjee said on Saturday at the inauguration of self defence workshops for schoolgirls.

“Across the globe people have given it a standing ovation, they are clapping. I think it has hit the right chord with everyone irrespective of gender,” she added. “The fact that we have tried to raise awareness has been conquered. As team Mardaani I am very grateful and hoping that in the coming days we would get to hear many more things.”

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, Mardaani stars Mukherjee as a police officer who fights the trafficking of young girls in India.

Bollywood celebrities have also given the thumbs up to the film.

Aamir Khan — known for his social activism — tweeted: “Saw Mardaani yesterday [Sunday]! Must watch, it can happen to anyone! Rani is superb. And so is the new actor who plays the villain, Tahir Raj Bhasin.”

“Rani Mukherjee is simply Outstanding in #Mardaani!!!! Blows your mind!!! Take a bow @yrf for a relevant and compelling film! [sic],” tweeted director-producer Karan Johar.

“Jus watchd Mardaani. Wht a powerful film and msg. Super performances by all and Rani was par excellence. Go Girl power..must watch tweetos! [sic]” was Shilpa Shetty’s comment.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has given tax-free status to Mardaani.

He watched the movie at a multiplex on Sunday with his wife Sadhna.

“We will give ‘tax free’ status to Mardaani in Madhya Pradesh considering the bold social message conveyed by it,” Chouhan posted on Twitter.

“Trafficking of young girls and women is worst evil which needs to be eliminated. Mardaani has brought it into focus,” he further tweeted.

Praising Mukherjee for her role, he said, “I congratulate Rani Mukherjee for a wonderful and powerful performance in Mardaani. Aditya Chopra has done well to produce this movie.”
