Dubai: Dubai owner Saeed Manana was denied a second successive Group race victory with Invincible Army who was beaten three-quarters of a length by James Garfield in the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

The son of Invincible Spirit looked to be travelling strongly when jockey Martin Hurley asked him for his effort with a furlong to run but, despite running on strong, he failed to peg back the winner in the hands of Frankie Dettori.

James Garfield, a son of Australian sprinter Exceed And Excel, gifted his trainer George Scott with the first Group win of his career and hopes of a victory in the Thoroughbred Racing Champions in America later this year.

Bookmakers Sky Bet installed James Garfield as the 11/2 favourite for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf on November 3.

A delighted Scott, who is married to owner Bill Gredley’s daughter, told ITV Racing: “We went away for a couple of days in Majorca, but we are going on a proper honeymoon in January. I got married a week ago today so it has been a pretty amazing week.

“He has danced every dance this year and has been unlucky on several occasions. He has shown it over five, six and seven furlongs now, so he is a pretty versatile horse. He has improved physically the whole time and I am slightly lost for words really.

“It was all pretty smooth for Frankie. He said he was where he wanted to be, although he lost his position, he had plenty of horse and hit the line great — it was dream stuff really.

“We will go to the Breeders’ Cup now. The Breeders’ Cup has always been the race we’ve been wanting to go to.”

Bruce Raymond, racing manager for Saeed Manana, felt the runner-up did not have the best of runs.

“He was unlucky. In several positions he was unlucky. It happens and it is not the first time. He ran very well.

“He is a pretty good horse that tries hard. We are just a bit disappointed.

“George has had the Group Two winner, but it would have been nice to see James have it, but it will come.”

“He just keeps on winning!”, @NewburyRacing tweeted after the ten-year-old Take Cover stormed home a winner of the Group 3 Dubai Airport International Airport World Trophy Stakes over 1,000 metres.

Ridden by David Allan, the David Griffith-trained son of Dubai World Cup winner Singspiel, won by ¾ of a length from Cotal Glory, the mount of championship leader Silvestre De Souza, with Muthmir, a further ¾ lengths back in third in the hands of Jim Crowley.

Muthmir ran in the colours of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance, who was also represented by fourth-placed Waady, ridden by Dane O’Neill.
