In this jet-set age, where everybody is on a mission to scale the heights of professional success, physical and mental health often take a backseat.

With the body and the mind constantly at work for long hours, executives are prone to conditions such as high stress levels, fatigue and computer-related injuries. This may hinder one's performance in the workplace in the long run. This is where yoga works like a charm. In this series we will focus on helping executives reduce their stress levels.

Breathe right

Yoga provides a solution in the form of pranayama, which employs certain breathing patterns to beat stress. By consciously controlling the air that one inhales and exhales, one can reach a state of mental calm, away from all other sensations.

Our spine is made up of ligaments, joints and muscles, which hold our postures of standing, walking and sitting. Most jobs are sedentary in nature and this damages the joints, the neck and the spinal cord and may lead to severe eyestrain and mental unrest. Even minor movements of body parts at regular intervals can help us keep blood flowing upwards.

Team building is a prerequisite for the successful completion of any project. Conflict resolution and amicable relations between subordinates and higher-ups are issues that are common in every organisation. A positive atmosphere is thus necessary. Yoga comes in handy to develop this bonhomie to a certain level.

Food habits also play a significant role in the wellbeing of executives. With little or no physical exercise in the workplace, eating healthy is the mantra to staying fit, augmented by the regular practice of yoga. Making the choice to eat "smart" and reduce the intake of caffeine and aerated beverages becomes important.

Yoga not only works wonders for professionals on an individual level but also facilitates them to put their best foot forward at work. In the following weeks, we will feature a series on more effective ways to deal with mentally and physically taxing situations with the help of yoga.

Join us in the next few days and combat stress in the workplace and lead a healthy life.
