Abu Dhabi: With its glitzy shopping malls and retail bonanazas, Abu Dhabi is not the place for secondhand shopping. Or it may appear so.

But in recent years buying pre-loved goods is a trend that is catching up among Abu Dhabi residents. Combing through hordes of designer wear, bags, vintage jewellery, winter clothes, books or CDs that others had once acquired with fervour, is becoming the new retail therapy for many shopaholics.

Flea markets, garage sales, car boot sales or Sunday markets – these new pastures of retail pleasure are attracting bargain hunters in droves.

Here are some of the most popular flea markets in Abu Dhabi

Sheraton Abu Dhabi Flea market

This is one of the oldest and most popular flea markets in town. Held three to four times a year, the secondhand charity flea market is a popular haunt for bargain shopping.

This all-day event is also a fun-filled family event, and the proceeds collected from the sale are donated to charities that work to improve the lives of impoverished children around the world. Entry is free. Each table costs Dh285

Saturday Market at Yas Island

Find all those once loved treasures and trinkets at Yas Island’s biggest community market to be held on October 17.

Organised by Tiny Bean Events, this secondhand market was a huge hit last year. With bouncy castles, musical water fountain and shaded playground, the market is as much a family event as a bargain hunting ground. This year, the Saturday market will introduce a car boot sale to its portfolio of events. Participants can book a slot for their car by paying Dh100.
