Manama: An Egyptian couple celebrated their wedding in a park in Saudi Arabia, saying that the developments in their homeland made it difficult to hold the reception there.

Open-air parties are rare in Saudi Arabia where marriage celebrations, especially by Saudi nationals, are very private.

“The critical times through which Egypt is going right now have forced us to host a brief wedding party here in Saudi Arabia, our second home,” the groom said. “We do hope that we will be able to travel to Cairo after the situation calms down and peace is restored,” he said.

Scores of relatives and friends attended the ceremony in the park in Tabuk, a city in north western Saudi Arabia, local Arabic daily Okaz reported on Thursday.

The park was the setting for a similar wedding party five months ago, the newspaper added.
