Schools are still closed and most of us are travelling away from the city to beat the heat, except for the few who have decided to brave the 100 degrees heat (well, at least that’s how hot it feels) or due to work and other commitments.

Even though the oppressive humidity doesn’t encourage any kind of outdoor activities, Dubai, the glorious metropolis of mind-boggling possibilities sitting in the middle of a hostile desert, does tempt you with its various opportunities for entertainment.

I spoke to many friends to create a little “go-to” list of things to do when you’re bored - and if you’re bored it means you haven’t really explored the city yet. Here’s to get you started on yours.

1. Shopping paradise: There’s a reason why you see tourists still flocking during this unbearable heat — great discounts, sales, competitions, special offers and the Dubai Summer Surprises. This shopping paradise never sleeps, and won’t let you sleep either. So slip on some comfortable shoes and hit the malls.

2. Indoor parks: These are a great place to let loose your inner child. Go bowling, skiing, snowboarding or ice-skating. You can even have an indoor skydive now with iFly Dubai.

3. Take a day vacation: Head to a beach resort in a nearby emirate. Lazing in the late afternoon is a great way to get that much needed Vitamin D.

4. Check in to a spa: A friend of mine recently went to a spa which has a “snow room” – literally a room filled with snow – or take your pick from the multitude of spa treatments on offer in the UAE.

5. Sweat it out: There’s no need to give up your fitness regime. Dubai Sports World at Dubai World Trade Centre, a 20,000 sq metre indoor multi sports facility, houses courts and pitches for badminton, basketball, cricket, football, rugby, tennis and volleyball.

6. Eat, drink and watch movies: Be it sushi, Spanish tapas, or some exotic summer thirst quenchers, take your pick from a host of restaurants and bars offering special deals during summer. Or order in and catch up on that DVD collection.

When I am not travelling during the summer holidays, I like to spend my time by really slowing down and savouring each day. Summer is meant to be enjoyed, so find what interests you, find the time and a way to do it and create those special memories.
