You’ve been through a lot these past few years. Are you back to full fitness?

I feel great now. I recently won the Powerboat UK championships and I have been contracted by Williams Advanced Engineering, part of the famous F1 team. This involves working as a driver consultant on its simulator programme in Qatar. It’s developing a racing driver training facility in the region.

Did it ever occur to you to take some time out after all the treatment you’ve had in the past couple of years? Racing must be demanding of mind and body.

Yes, it’s a slow road back. Fitness is the key to successful racing. This is the main hurdle you have to overcome when returning to racing. I try to get in the gym as much as possible to help my full return to motorsport and also took up Powerboat racing, which has been fantastic in helping me regain my strength and physical fitness.

How different is racing a powerboat from racing an F1 car? What, if anything, do the two have in common?

Racing on water is very different to tarmac. A car circuit is the same lap after lap. In boats you are constantly looking for the best piece of water to use. The quest for victory is exactly the same. Just like cars, I race to win.

What was it that appealed to you about motorsports when you were younger?

My father was a champion powerboat racer so it’s in my blood. I saw it as an outlet, something to do and channel my competitive nature. I like speed and movement, plus the general excitement of racing.

So are you getting all the perks that come with being a Formula One driver? Endorsements, freebies, girls… (getting featured in brilliant men’s magazines)?

No, not really. This normally happens when you get to F1. I hope all these things will come along. My girlfriend would have an issue with the girls part of the perks though!

What advice would you give any young driver hoping to break into motor-racing?

There is a natural progression from karting to single-seater racing. Karting provides all the basics and really allows you to develop your racing techniques. If you are a racer then it’s what you enjoy. Karting is simply the first opportunity you have to perfect your skills. Make sure you have someone who is willing to support you financially. Even karting is very expensive and you will need a big budget to compete, never mind win.

Which racing driver did you worship when you were younger and why?

I don’t really have heroes. I’m inspired by anybody who does things beyond the norm and achieves greatness. I thought Bradley Wiggins in the London Olympics was very inspiring. The dedication you need in sport is massive, so I respect all great sports stars.

How do you relax when you’re not driving?

I love flying helicopters. I’m also building a 15-metre power boat, which is very rewarding. My hope is to compete in the Cowes to Monte Carlo race next year. I also love spending time with family and friends.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

It has to be winning the F2 title and driving the Williams F1 car in Abu Dhabi. It was a great feeling to be on the edge of the sport I set out to race in.

Who would play you in a movie of your life?

That’s a difficult one. He would of course have to be very good looking! I suppose someone like Ryan Reynolds.
