Dubai Kolaveri Di first took off on the internet, with millions watching the video of the song and its international spin-offs, but these days you're just as likely to hear it in a club, with many Dubai-based DJs claiming it's currently their most requested track.

While it's most popular in clubs playing music from the Indian subcontinent, DJs with a more international slant are also making their own versions.

Zubair Dawood, manager at Malecon, a Latin-music club at Dubai Marine Resort and Spa, said the club's DJs get around 10 requests a night for the track.

After realising its popularity, the club decided to put its own spin on the track. "It is being played and rated around the world, so that's why the DJ made his own reggaeton remix," said Dawood. Reggaeton is a musical style combining Jamaican dancehall with Latin rap and salsa.

"It is requested around ten times. On Wednesday we played twice," said Dawood, adding that the song is a feel-good party song that is liked by the club's international clientele. "It's like songs like Party Rock and I Gotta Feeling — we'll play it as long as the crowd want it."

At the nearby Boudoir, a club playing mainly Western r'n'b and Arabic pop, DJ Benson says he was asked to play five remixes of the song during one private party.

DJ Tushar, resident DJ at Pulse, Movenpick Hotel Bur Dubai, said the Tamil language of the song actually makes it more enjoyable.
