One of India’s hottest rappers will make his UAE debut this week.
Divine, a Mumbai-bred musician also known as Vivian Fernandes, performs on July 22 at The Music Room.
As the names in the list of Indian rappers continue to grow, Divine stands out. He saw an upsurge in popularity after having been endorsed by Apple Music and Sony Music India for singles Mere Gully Mein (In My Street) and Jungli Sher (Wild Lion).
Known for a “purist view” of hip-hop, Divine has found acclaim from critics and masses for his hard-hitting lyrics about growing up in the slums of Mumbai, with some even going so far as to name him the “voice of the Mumbai streets”.
Mere Gully Mein was Divine’s first release after signing with Sony Music in 2015, the video for which was later declared by Rolling Stone India to be the best of the year.
His list of accolades include being named the Best New Artist of 2015 by iTunes and Apple Music in India, and being included in the list of the top six artists to watch out for in 2016 by the BBC Asian Network. With Jungli Sher, Divine became the first Indian artist to be launched with a video worldwide by Apple Music.
