These are by far the most revealing spy shots of the next generation Porsche 911 Turbo we’ve seen yet, and that’s why there are a few problems with what we’re seeing.

Now obviously, we’re letting the taillights slide (don’t they remind you of a 928?) because they’re marginally disguised and won’t look like that in production form. We sincerely hope so, anyway. But what we can’t forgive are swooping Cayman-like rear fenders on a wide body Turbo platform.

But then Zuffenhausen makes it all up with awesome front fenders evoking the old 993, 964 and 3.0 Porsches with a horizontal top line of the wing parallel to the road. Sure, we hardly expected a Slantnose (or should we say Flachbau?), but it’s nice that Porsche found good aerodynamics while staying with traditional upright-ish headlights.

Then if we go back to the, err, back, ahead of the rear wheels – no doubt wearing hugely fat tyres – are the quintessential Turbo intakes, and moving even further back is a properly big bi-wing. We also love the new front bumper which borrows ideas from the Boxster-Cayman school of thought, with flanking trapezoidal intakes.

As for what’s underneath this longer 911 (longer wheelbase too, and possibly an engine moved slightly closer towards the middle), we can safely expect a next-generation smaller flat-six. And since the current Turbo S manages 530bhp, let’s make an educated guess at about 550bhp for the Turbo, and close to 600bhp for the following S model. Driving the four wheels will remain the task of Porsche’s seven-speed PDK, but we’re much more excited about the upcoming seven-speed manual transmission.

Bring on Frankfurt 2011, and let’s see what exactly is hiding under these last few bits of duct tape disguise.
