When the doors of the Geneva motor show open next month, most of us will be scrambling to the supercar manufacturers’ stands hoping to catch a glimpse of that rumoured Lamborghini or Ferrari.

But Fiat has plans to grab its own share of the limelight, and it’s in the shape of a Cinquecento. Well, maybe not exactly in that same shape, but this new car is in fact another model falling in the 500 line-up of cars. The range already includes the Abarth and Cabrio models, but this 500L – the L standing for Large (no idea why they just didn’t use 500G, as in Grande) – is the latest addition.

The idea is to cater to a different type of customer, one that requires MPV passenger space combined with the feel of a small SUV, according to Fiat. The dimensions of the 500L are that of a B-segment car, meaning seating for five passengers. We like the idea, and Fiat did do something similar already with the 600 Multipla in the Fifties and Sixties.

To be produced in Serbia, the 500L aims to offer Italian style and contemporary engine technologies: Fiat will offer a turbo diesel motor and two petrol options, a TwinAir and a 1.4-litre.
