The king of our roads is getting a bit long in the tooth. After all, it’s only been, oh, about 33 years since the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen was first launched.

To be fair, it’s received countless updates, and now it sits smugly on its automotive throne in G55 AMG guise powered by a 5.5-litre V8 supercharged engine worth a colossal 507bhp.

That’s good enough to propel this off-roading legend from 0-100kph in just 5.5 seconds, and bully anything out of the fast lane. But it’s still not quite enough. For that reason, and especially for Middle Eastern customers, Mercedes-Benz is preparing a G63 model spied here testing in the European winter.

The huge air intakes up front suggest that this thing is packing a 6.2-litre V8 like the one found in the SLS AMG, where it pushes out over 570 horsepower.

Our spy claims the spied G63 is much louder than the already raucous G55, so here’s hoping that the glorious hand-built 6.2-litre is indeed hiding under that bonnet. Whatever the truth, the G63 will certainly be some swansong.
