My Wheels: 2009 Chevrolet Lumina Sport

George Kuzhikandam's future ruled out a Camaro, but that didn't stop him wanting a muscle car

That's quite a paint job. Custom?

Sure is. It's a cocktail of colours. There's Atomic Green and a bit of silver, topped off with metallic black, and then everything is covered in a layer of paint protection coating to keep the shine brilliant. To be honest, even I get confused when people ask me what colour my car is! In fact, the exterior is a one-off design done by the dealership itself, so it's all properly registered and fully guaranteed.

So what's your story?

Oh, the usual. Had my heart set on a Camaro, but my wife and I are expecting twins. We had to think of baby seats and prams and all the other stuff we're going to need to carry.

But then I took a test drive in the Lumina and felt it's really just a Camaro dressed like a saloon, so we're both happy. It's safe, strong, heavy and it's a real muscle car too — that's what drew me to it in the first place.

Tell us more about the car...

It is my pride and joy... apart from my wife, of course. It's a 2009 Chevrolet Lumina Sport, 3.6-litre V6, which I bought brand new. Basically it's completely stock at the moment, but I made sure it has all the add-ons like sunroof, spoilers, side and front skirts.

The car has a very spacious all-black interior with sporty red lighting and a Blaupunkt sound system with a subwoofer. I have added a 160Gb iPod and got 3M premium tinting for the windows. When you compare it with other cars in the same segment, the space they have managed to create inside the Lumina is amazing. The leg space is admirable. Yet the car looks sporty.

So you're happy with it?

Very. This car became my dream come true once I realised the amount of attention I get on the road, because of the colour and the bodywork. The kids in my building refer to my car as their own race car. Even though it's mine, I get to share the feeling of pride.

Whenever I want to take it for a long drive on weekends it's the road through Masafi to Fujairah that I choose. Those zig-zag roads help to keep a smile on my face and explore the abilities of my Lumina. But then I wonder how it would be to drive a Bugatti Veyron on those roads…
