With all the traffic and general rushing around that’s involved in our lives, finding the time to relax is more important than ever. Some people relax by working out, some by reading, and some by socialising. But everything, it seems, involves some sort of pressure on the body in some way. To remove pressure in its entirety, have you considered trying floatation?

Floatation is a very simple method of relaxation, and one that I had never attempted before. That was until I got in touch with Point Zero; a floatation centre with branches in both Abu Dhabi and now Dubai.

I was invited along to try it out to see if I could indeed find a bit of peace. Guests have the option of using a floatation pod – not for the claustrophobic among you – or what Point Zero calls a “cabin”. Think more of a bathroom in a 5-Star hotel, but better. Inside it features a separate WC, an immaculate shower – with great water pressure – and a well-appointed dressing room, complete with slippers, towels, and a hairdryer.

Completely 100 per cent private, you take a quick shower before stepping into what can only be described as a giant bathtub, which has been filling automatically while you’ve been de-robing. It’s not just bath water, it contains a harmless chemical solution, salt water effectively, which is what causes you to float. It’s like being in the Dead Sea.

At first it’s a little strange, as you inadvertently crane your neck, which starts to ache a little. Then you work out how laid back you can actually go. At this point your really are floating above the water. There is no part of your body touching anything; you just float there, in either silence or to your favourite music.

You’re given a pair of ear plugs to keep the water out of your ears, as well as a pure water spray, which is to be used in case you get any salty water in your eyes. You can also change the colour of the mood lighting to suit your desires – if you have your eyes open that is, which I doubt you will.

I found myself drifting off to sleep, and almost into a dream-like state. All you can hear is the gentle splashing of water around your body – and your music if you’ve selected it.

Afterwards I emerged from the experience summarily relaxed and, truthfully, wanting to go straight back in there! Your muscles haven’t had to do a thing! I recommend the cabin personally; it’s totally private and well-appointed. It’s a great way to shut out the city and enjoy some escape time.
