Indian designer brothers Gulam and Ali Khan are going international. The Pune-based menswear designers have just opened their second Stile store in Meena Bazar in Dubai, with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and his brothers, the director Sohail Khan and actor Arbaaz Khan, in attendance.
The duo work predominantly with Indian traditional pieces but with a contemporary twist that’s targeted at an international clientele.
To mark their UAE arrival, we got them to tell us six things we need to know about Stile by Gulam Ali.
1. Traditional, contemporary, fusion and Indo-Western.
“Stile brings together a diversity of influences and styles in terms of fabric blends like silk jacquards and brocades that have been crafted into dinner jackets, bridal formals and festive wear. We draw our inspiration from Persian culture and Mughal motifs.”
2. An unique menswear brand.
“Our designs embody the variety from the world-renowned Indian handloom. We combine the old and the new using timeless fabric with the latest sharp cuts, masculine fits and embroidery.”
3. It’s not just a business.
“We treat our clothes as art. We look to design our collections as artists do their masterpieces. We like to play with colours and textures and source our fabric through the length and breadth of India using materials ranging from silk to fine cottons and velvet to linen and jute.”
4. Our signature colour is black and bronze.
“We love all that is antique, royal and regal. We use some select imported fabrics and cater to a wide audience, both Indian and Western. For those who like a more casual look, our cocktail jackets carry folk prints and digital prints.”
5. We come from a garments background.
“We grew up around beautiful clothes. We first decided to become designers when we were teenagers and some years later we started designing clothes for ourselves.”
6. Brand ambassadors of Indian culture.
