The 69th annual Golden Globes was a triumph on the fashion front (with only a few hideous style hiccups along the way) with stars of the silver and small screen rocking an array of truly gorgeous gowns on the red carpet last night.
Blush and nude tones were big news – our faves included Charlize Theron is a magnificent shell pink Dior couture number, Heidi Klum in a backless Calvin Klein sheath (topped off with a million dollars of Lorraine Schwartz rocks), Modern Family’s Julie Bowen in vintage Reem Acra and Jessica Alba in softest lilac embellished Gucci.
Fishtail gowns were a huge trend, with yet another Modern Family star, this time Sofia Vergara, leading the way and showing off her ridiculously bodacious body in a stunning teal blue mermaid gown by Vera Wang. Reese Witherspoon and Elle MacPherson followed suit in Zac Posen’s classic fishtail inspired silhouettes, as did E! Fashion Police star Kelly Osbourne – but we were too busy looking at her revolting, grey slicked back hairdo to really notice her dress. Someone really should be calling the style cops on her, agreed?
Gucci was one of the main go-to fashion houses of the night, with Salma Hayek and Evan Rachel Wood the most stunning of the Gucci-clad girls – Salma outstanding in her black and gold beaded bodice gown, designed especially for her by Creative Director, Frida Giannini, while ERW knocked it out of the fashion ballpark in a one of a kind shimmering green and black sequin gown, finished with an ostrich plume train.
Playing a close second were the fashion-forward Lanvin lovers, out in full force, with Natalie Portman making her big return to the red carpet in a fabulous fuschia pink and red silk mullet gown, followed by The Help’s Emma Stone choosing a beautiful burgundy draped chiffon number to set off her fiery red up-do.
And the classic LBDs were far from boring. Girl of the moment Rooney Mara looked typically intense in cutaway Nina Ricci, new face of Dior Mila Kunis was smouldering in a chiffon goddess gown by the classic French fashion house and Julianne Moore was flawless in Chanel ruffles and amazing emerald droplet earrings (which were totally the accessories of the night – just check out the lobes of Rashida Jones, Emily Deschanel and Julianna Margulies at their make-you-green-with-envy enormous rocks.)
Winners of most fabulously offbeat frock awards go to Glee star Dianna Agron, who was beyond spectacular in scarlet, swan laser cut Giles Deacon (swans, we tell you!) and the eternally quirky Tilda Swinton, whose pale blue two piece by fashion bestie Haider Ackerman (they apparently go on holiday together – cute!) would have looked so wrong on anyone else, but was so totally right on her – especially topped off with her platinum blonde fifties quiffed do. And W.E star Andrea Riseborough simply took our breath away in a divine pistachio green lace corseted creation by Vivienne Westwood –she may not been nominated for her role in Madonna’s new flick, but she totally would have won the Best Supported actress of the night, if you catch our drift.
Biggest shock of the night? I-can’t-believe-she’s-not-wearing-black Angelina Jolie, who looked incredible in ice white Atelier Versace, with a crimson fold detail at the neckline. With her perfect pout painted blood red, and finished with a scarlet clutch, Ange looked awesome – if not a wee bit scary in a ‘stare-at-her-too-long-and-you-may-turn-to-stone’ kind of way.
And while the starlets of Hollywood were the main focus, no-one could ignore the grand dames of the business, who blew us away with their incredible style. Major fashion kudos once again to Helen Mirren, who was dazzling in midnight blue Badgely Mischka, the eternally gorgeous Dianne Lane who looked ridiculously hot in glittering gold beaded chiffon and 53-year-old Madonna, sensational in a gunmetal and green armour inspired number - both by Reem Acra.
Sadly, there were some bum notes – and no, we won’t skim over them just to be nice. Michelle Williams, who has just spent months perfecting Marilyn Monroe allure, looked beyond square in blue velour column dress by Jason Wu, topped off with an alice band (was it daughter Matilda’s we wonder?); Lea Michelle ruined a divine silver Marchesa gown by posing like a bodybuilder; Freida Pinto would have sent us to sleep in her snoozeworthy blue prom dress, had her hair not sent us into rubbish-barnet-induced hysterics; Missi Pyle was literally wearing the biggest, ugliest pile of icky-gold and green tat we’ve seen in decades; Mission Impossible star Paula Patton looked impossibly awful in bright yellow strapless ruching (euw!) Sharon Osbourne should have stayed in on her sofa rather than wearing it, while Jessica Biel made us cringe in a HUGE way by wearing a ‘this-is-how-pretty-I’m-going-to look in-my-wedding-dress-Justin’ cream lace number by Elie Saab – we know you’re getting married sweetie, just calm down already, OK?
And that, dear fashionista, was the Golden Globes. Needless to say, WE.CANNOT.WAIT for The Oscars. Until next time…
