What beauty brand Starskin aims to give customers is right in its name — the complexion of the stars. Co-founder Nicole Arnoldussen says the line of sheet masks and treatments, which draw from Korean skincare methods, will help us non-celebrities achieve that red-carpet glow right at home. “Starskin was born from a passion to make glowing celebrity complexions attainable without a team of beauty and make-up experts,” Arnoldussen told Gulf News tabloid! in an interview.

We find out more about the brand and Arnoldussen’s skincare tips.

Excerpts from the interview:

Where did the brand’s interest in Korean skincare come from?

K-Beauty is a term for all cosmetics and skincare products and innovations from South Korea. In our travels, [co-founder] Paul [Hendriks] and myself spent years studying up [on] beauty trends and we were particularly fascinated by the Korean people’s — both men and women — obsession with their multi-step skincare regime, their strong preference on potent and natural ingredients that deliver results, and their dedication to skincare innovation. Some of these amazing innovations include sheet masks, non-water-based serums and skincare applicators; so we thought, ‘Hey, we need these. In fact, the rest of the world needs this.’

The rest is history. We consulted with top dermatologists, skincare experts and celebrity make-up artists and developed our range of high-performance made-in-Korea skincare.

The brand is mostly known for its face masks …

Indeed, of our 27 products, 24 are sheet masks. Sheet masks give incredible results … When wearing a sheet mask, the material forms an effective barrier on your skin, to essentially force-feed a concentrated dose of serum into the skin layers.

What are other star products you wish more people knew about?

Our 7-Second Morning Mask is the latest cult beauty product ... It is the only product on the market that combines seven skincare steps — including a leave-in mask and make-up primer.

What are the biggest mistakes people make with their skin?

Never underestimate the importance of a good daily skincare ritual using quality skincare products with good ingredients, and twice-weekly sheet mask treatments to maintain a healthy glow. It is also very important to remove all traces of make-up before going to bed. And I would say, the application of sun protection to fight UV damage and signs of ageing.

How can people improve their skin?

An essential daily skincare routine should include cleansing, toning and moisturising. And don’t forget the sunblock. Exfoliate once or twice a week and always follow with a pampering mask treatment.

What are some of the products you use yourself at home?

One of my favourites is the Starskin The Gold Mask — this concentrated, non-water based bio-cellulose sheet mask is perfect when my skin feels especially dry and dehydrated.

The 7-Second Morning Mask is my go-to in the mornings when I wake up and feel that my skin looks especially dull and tired. It’s packed with potent and fermented extracts from soybean, milk and black yeast. When travelling, I always take along with me a face or eye mask to use in-flight to fight dryness.

Are there any new products from Starskin on the way?

In January, we will be launching JuiceLab — a super potent collection of fresh Vitamin C sheet masks, made using flash freeze-dried Vitamin C crystals … this is also going to the highest-strength (75 per cent) and most radiance-boosting Vitamin C skincare on the market.

Following the success of our 7-Second Morning Mask, we’ll be introducing the 7-Second Overnight Mask. This time, a non-water based formulation, so it’s going to be a concentrated all-night repair, replenishing and nourishing treatment.

We will be revealing a very special new product in February 2018. This will be our first Starskin Pro product, and is a truly revolutionary and pioneering two-step skin cell regenerating and renewal system.
