Dubai: More than 800 swimmers are expected to take part in Wild Wadi's Swim around Burj Al Arab event in aid of humanitarian relief.

Last year's event raised more than Dh220,000. Proceeds from this year's event will go to the UAE's Red Crescent Society and Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, which works in nearly 70 countries and provides medical aid to those in need.

Individuals and teams of up to four people can sign up and train for first, second and third place finishes in the competitive 1600\-metre swim category. Swimmers aged 7 to 60 are eligible to enter the event.

The 2013 winner, UAE Olympic representative, Obaid Al Jasmi, will defend his title this year.

After the competitive race, families, friends and social swimmers can enjoy views of the Burj Al Arab during a non-competitive open swim along an 800-metre course circling the hotel.

Participants to the 800-metre Open Social Swim category will receive medals and qualify to enter a raffle draw during the event.
