Dubai: Imagine the gleaming metropolis of Dubai stripped of its skyscrapers and vast road networks. An upcoming television show will do just that.

Strip the City, to be aired on Discovery Channel HD, uses spectacular CGI animation to peel the steel and glass off the Burj Khalifa and roll back the tarmac on Shaikh Zayed Road.

The idea is to show how the city defies logic. Dubai is one of the driest places on earth. It is pummelled by sandstorms and its skyscrapers rest on sand. Yet it continues to flourish.

The local episode digs beneath the city’s skin to discover the secret engineering wonders and geological forces that make it possible. Leading engineers will give an insight into the complex underground systems that pump water around Burj Khalifa and also reveal spectacular feats pulled off by designers of The Palm islands.

Ahmad Al Matroushi, Managing Director of Emaar Properties, said: “The landmarks of Dubai have become a reference point for architects, engineers and designers across the world with the city pioneering some of the foremost projects to date. Through Strip the City, viewers will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the fascinating scientific and technological breakthroughs that have helped the city in achieving its towering ambitions.”

The episode on Dubai will be telecast at 10.55pm on OSN channel 500 on May 19. Other major cities covered in the series are London, Rome, San Francisco, Sydney and Toronto.

Kasia Kieli, President and MD, Discovery Networks CEEMEA said: “When we chose the cities to include we knew we had to include Dubai with it now being an iconic super-city of the future.”
