Julia Barretto was launched only recently as one of ABS CBN’s talents yet she’s managed to bag a lead role in Cofradia, a television remake of a film by 1950s icon Gloria Romero. Watch out for this superstar-in-the-making. We talk to the rising star about her new project.

First project and it’s already a lead role. What can you say about that?

I am very happy. It’s a fantastic opportunity. It still has not sunk in; I just know I have something exciting to do. As to how big it is, I haven’t thought about that yet. It’s not really my first project, though, as I have had bit roles in some television shows in the past; although back then I still was not a part of Star Magic, the talent management arm of ABS CBN. But yes, this is my biggest so far.

Were you chosen because you were a Barretto?

The production team said they chose me specifically for the project — I mean that they had me in mind. I may have been chosen because I’m a Barretto, but maybe they also saw something in me that fits the role perfectly.

Your family is currently in the middle of an ugly fight. Your thoughts on this?

I’d rather not dwell on it. It’s a fight between adults let them settle it. I’m too much of a happy person to be focusing on that [fight]. It’s a family concern of course; but it’s best settled between them.

Young stars are normally built up on their pairing with a love team. Will you have one in Cofradia?

I still don’t know who my leading man will be or if he will be my permanent love team. They are still doing some screen tests and they will announce one soon.

Would you rather be on your own or with a love team?

I have my handlers to take care of my career and I leave it to them [to decide] what is best for me. They know what is good and I will follow their advice and plans.

If you had the chance to pick your leading man, who would it be?

Wow, there are so many good actors in ABS CBN. I don’t have a particular choice; I guess it’s up to the production team to say who will be the best for me; with who I will have the best onscreen chemistry.

What’s your reaction to people saying you’re the next Claudine Barretto?

That’s a big compliment. She’s a great actress and I’d like to follow in her footsteps.
