Lindsay Lohan is to star in her first film since 2013, a mysterious new project called The Shadow Within.

The former child star took to Instagram to share a photograph from her third day on set, in which she appears in character on a bed adorned with pristine white sheets. Lohan’s last full-length feature was the critically panned 2013 thriller The Canyons, directed by American Gigolo’s Paul Schrader and written by the novelist Bret Easton Ellis.

Where The Canyons was subject to extensive coverage before it had even begun shooting, courtesy of the involvement of Lohan, Ellis and porn star James Deen (as the male lead), little is known about The Shadow Within. The title is the English-language translation of the 1970 psychological drama Kage no Kuruma by the acclaimed Japanese director Yoshitar Nomura. That movie is about an emasculated married man who suspects the young son of his mistress is plotting murder, but it is not known if Lohan’s project is a remake.

The 29-year-old actor, who has struggled in the past with substance abuse and spent time in jail, appeared in the West End play Speed-the-Plow in October last year, receiving decent critical notices. “Anyone who turned up expecting Ms Lohan, making her stage debut at the age of 28, to exhibit spoilt-child celeb behaviour — fluffing lines, or breaking parole, or racing off to rehab, or simply not turning up — was in for a disappointment,” wrote the Guardian’s Euan Ferguson. “She was rather sweet, rather husky, rather wide-eyed — and rather good. She was, in fact, possibly the best thing about this show.”
