(FILES) This file photo taken on February 15, 2016 shows actor, composer Lin-Manuel Miranda performing on stage during the "Hamilton" GRAMMY performance for The 58th GRAMMY Awards at Richard Rodgers Theater in New York City. The musical phenomenon "Hamilton", inspired by the life of a hero of the independence of the United States Alexander Hamilton, was named May 3, 2016 in 16 categories of Tony Awards, a new Broadway record. The show written by Lin-Manuel Miranda --who has written the dialogues and composed the music and lyrics of chansons-- dethroned what was previously the gold standard, namely the musical "The Producers" by Mel Brooks named 15 times in 2001, as "Billy Elliot" in 2009. / AFP / GETTY IMAGES NORTH AMERICA / STR Image Credit: AFP

The megahit musical Hamilton has grabbed a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, the biggest haul in Broadway history and another notch in the show’s march into theatrical history.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop-flavoured biography about the first US treasury secretary on Tuesday broke the 15-nominations record held by The Producers and Billy Elliot.

Hamilton was nominated in virtually every category it could compete in, from acting to scenic design.

Next month, it will compete for Broadway’s biggest crown — best new musical — with Bright Star, School of Rock, Shuffle Along and Waitress.

The best play category is composed of Eclipsed, The Father, The Humans and King Charles III.

The awards will be handed out June 12, with James Corden playing host from the Beacon Theatre in New York.
