The cast of the Kennedy family-based indie flick Chappaquiddick is rounding out, with the addition of Oscar-nominated actor Bruce Dern.

Last seen in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, Dern, who’s rather comfortable in bad-guy roles, will play Kennedy family patriarch Joe Kennedy in the film.

Chappaquiddick details the events surrounding the infamous 1969 incident in which then 37-year-old Ted Kennedy drove his car off a Massachusetts bridge after attending a party, according to Deadline. Kennedy survived the incident, which killed passenger Mary Jo Kopechne, a 28-year-old former campaign worker for Robert Kennedy.

Dern joins Kate Mara (who will play Kopechne), Ed Helms (Kennedy cousin Joe Gargan) and Jason Clarke (Ted Kennedy).

The film, being directed by John Curran, is set to begin principal photography after Labor Day.
