UAE resident RJ Shaan and Malayalam director Antony Sony couldn’t have asked for more. Their Malayalam debut film, C/O Saira Banu won hearts with its interesting family drama of two mothers who will go to any length for their sons.

Shaan, who works as Creative Head of Club FM 99.6 has written the story and screenplay while Sony, a product of Kochi’s Neo Film School, has directed the film. Shaan and Sony began their journey as assistants to Malayalam director Rosshan Andrews. They made their first short film, Moonamidam, a multiple award winner. During a screening of Moonamidam, the seeds for their first feature film were sown.

Shaan recalled meeting a mother there, who represented her son, an aspiring filmmaker.

“She knew everything about the craft and technology and her love for her son was there to see,” he said.

It provided fodder for the script of C/O Saira Banu.

Manju Warrier and Amala Akkineni play the leads along with Shane Nigam. The supporting cast includes Joy Mathews, Niranjana, P.Balachandran, Sujith Sankar and octogenarian actress Kanchana (who won this year’s Kerala state award).

Shaan plans to direct his first feature film next year while Sony is waiting for an exciting script to direct his second film.

C/O Saira Banu releases in the UAE on May 4.
