Nayanthara and Simbu in Idhu Namma Aalu.

If ex-lovers Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone could work together for Bollywood film Tamasha, why not Simbu and Nayanthara?

Tamil director Pandiraj brings the former couple together in Idhu Namma Aalu (That’s my Girl), a romantic comedy releasing in the UAE on May 26.

That’s why this film, which took over two years to make, is much awaited.

Pandiraj, who shot to fame in 2009 with children’s film Pasanga, has explored a fully romantic story for the first time in his career. Simbu plays Shiva while Nayanthara is Mylaa, both IT professionals.

It’s about their journey of love, Pandiraj says.

How did he manage to get the former lovers to work together?

“When I narrated the story to them, they both agreed since they found the story related to their lives,” he says.

One can’t help remembering Simbu’s Karthik of Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya (VTV). Will Simbu’s Shiva match that acclaimed role?

Pandiraj believes that Simbu’s Shiva will not disappoint viewers. While Gautham Menon’s VTV was all about love, in Idhu Namma Aalu, Pandiraj has woven comedy into the love story.

It’s not just Soori bringing in the laughs but the camaraderie shared by the lead pair will keep the audience smiling. Andrea is the other heroine.

Shot in Chennai and Kumbakonam, Idhu Namma Aalu is produced by Simbu’s father, T. Rajendar; Simbu’s younger brother Kuralarasan makes his debut as a composer. The soundtrack has Simbu singing two songs, Kuralarasan one and Rajender singing the peppy Maaman Waiting. Cinematography is by Balasubramaniam.
