Walking up to the podium to collect his National Film Award in May, actor-director Samuthirakani could not help but recall his 15-year-old self as a young runaway. All that he carried with him was a dream to become an actor in Tamil cinema.

More than three decades later, the best supporting actor award is the cherry on top for this native of Rajapalayam, who did not study beyond grade ten.

Samuthirakani’s portrayal of conflicted police office Muthuvel in Tamil film Visaranai was praised by the jury.

His characters leave an indelible mark on the minds of viewers. Whether it’s Kanagu of Subramaniapuram; the father in Vellaiyilla Pattathari; Mooka of Rajini Murugan or the headmaster who teaches maths in Amma Kanukku, every character is distinct.

Expectations are high now with his film Appa, releasing in India on July 1.

Samuthrakani, besides directing the film, plays the titular role.

“This story grew from my memories of my father, whom I lost at 15, and my own experiences,” says the father of two.

“For every child, the father is his/her first hero. People will relate to it and the story will trigger memories,” Samuthirakani added.

Child actors Vignesh (of Kaakka Muttai fame) and Yuvasri (who played the daughter in Amma Kanukku) star in the film. Thambi Ramiah plays a significant role.

Ilayaraja has composed the soundtrack, while Richard M. Nathan is the cinematographer.

Samuthirakani turned producer with Appa under his banner Nadodigal Productions, named after his highly acclaimed directorial venture.
