The title of this Tamil film, opening in the UAE on July 30, triggers memories of another film of the same name released in 1982. That revenge saga, with Kamal Haasan in the lead, was a blockbuster, as film lovers will recall.

The new Sakalakala Vallavan, directed by Suraaj, is touted as a romantic comedy with Jeyam Ravi, Trisha and Anjali in the leads.

The film’s title had been Appatakar, but it was renamed as Sakalakala Vallavan, with permission from AVM production house, the makers of the 1982 film.

Director Suraaj, a former associate of Tamil director Sundar C, said: “This story is about Shakthivel, an unemployed youth who seems to be a Mr-know-it-all, and how he is caught between two women.”

Ravi plays Shakthivel. Trisha plays his lover, an arrogant woman. Anjali plays Shaktivel’s morrapennu (his uncle’s daughter), a village girl.

For humour there is comedian Soori. Suraaj says that his role will be much talked-about. “Also look out for comedian Vivek with his head tonsured, a first for a film role.”

“The story is a humorous take on the institution of marriage, which is fast losing its meaning,” said Ravi.

“As someone comfortable in making comedy films, you can expect a full-length comedy film,” added Suraaj.

S. Thaman has scored music. Ravi sings on Palppu Vangittein, while Simbu has rendered a peppy kuthu (folk) number and composer Iman has sung Bujjimma.
