Malayalam film lovers will remember Bhadran’s iconic film, Spadikam, which featured Mohan Lal and Tilakan in lead roles. The family drama about a teacher’s obsession with mathematics and his tyrranical treatment of his son spoke about the fractured relationship between the two. As viewers remember Mohan Lal as Aadu Thomas, they also remember child actor Roopesh Pithambaran, who played young Thomas in the film.

That was 22 years ago. In the meantime, Pithambaran has directed two films — Theevaram and You Too Brutus.

He is now making a return to acting with Oru Mexican Aparatha, in which he plays the leader of a student political group.

“The response has been mind-blowing,” said Pithambaran over the telephone from Kerala. “I was hesitant to watch the film in theatres fearing audience’s reaction to my negative character. But surprisingly many came up and complimented me. I am happy to be recognised as an actor.”

Oru Mexican Aparatha is directed by Tom Emmatty, who assisted Pithambaran on his two directorial ventures.

When Emmatty suggested that he play the part, Pithambaran was apprehensive initially.

“Tom’s idea of using hidden cameras was brilliant, it caught many candid moments of the character,” added Pithambaran who lost 26kg for the role.

The scene where he had to slap close buddy Tovino Thomas was not easy. Thomas had assisted him on Theevaram and acted in You Too Brutus.

“I just couldn’t slap him hard,” says Pithambaran, who did his primary schooling in Abu Dhabi.

“Tovino made it easy for me by slapping me first and then the retort came quick.”

Pithambaran was in seventh grade when Spadikam happened.

Initially, he was scared of late actor Tilakan, who is known for his serious and tough characters, but after shooting a scene, he got a glimpse into the actor’s humility.

Pithambaran credits Bhadran for his acting chops.

He remembers meeting Mohan Lal on the sets of Spadikam.

“Lal ettan [big brother] would bring homemade pickles and lunch time was interesting.”

Pithambaran is keen on doing more roles. “But it must be one that will take me to the next level,” he says.
