Malayalam screenwriter Ranjan Pramod is best remembered for his films Meesa Madhavan, Mannasinakkare, Achuvinte Amma and Naran. After writing the script for Satyan Anthikad’s Ennum Epozhum, Pramod donned the director’s hat for the third time for Rakshadhikari Baiju Oppu. The film is doing well at the box office and releases in the UAE on May 18.

Pramod spoke to Gulf News tabloid! about the film.

The spark for the script

After Photographer (his first directorial film) I travelled widely and visited villages. It was a nostalgic journey for me, taking me to my childhood days. And, I wanted to write a story that would bring out the child in us. Life in a village is simple with time at your disposal.

Biju Menon as Baiju

Initially I wondered about casting Mamuka or Lal ettan [Mohanlal] but as the story developed and I closed my eyes, one face that came to my mind repeatedly was that of Biju Menon’s. Biju also liked the role. I have met such patrons who encouraged us as children and left a mark in our hearts.

Working with Biju was good. He is the coolest guy and very cooperative. Biju identified with many elements of his character and through his interpretation, he brought Baiju alive onscreen. We shot in Paiyoli, a village in Calicut.

Up next

I am working on a script for an action film and keen on Ajith (Tamil actor) playing the lead.

In the meantime I am also planning to direct a Malayalam film.
